Fourth (and final) Dig Day. Due to severe time constraints as well as the departure of most of the volunteers (only four remain at this point—two diggers and two sifters), the day’s archeological activities can best be described as “Wing-It Day” or “Quick-and-Dirty Day.” Since not enough earth had been moved during the three previous days’ digging, it was decided to bring in a backhoe to do some trenching in high-potential areas, including the gouge area and the area where Dave Hyndman found his “exciting anomaly.” After a meeting of the minds with Bill Doleman over dinner last night, the remaining volunteers were granted permission to “do their own thing” and conduct shallow strip-digging, or trenching, over a wider area.

Promising results would justify the last day’s decisions. “Alley Cat,” the backhoe operator, was able to dig ten long and deep trenches in the prede-termined spots; one across the line of the alleged gouge gave indications that such a feature was indeed present where it was said to have been. The strip-trenching activities by the remaining volunteers produced additional HMUOs, which were bagged for shipment to and safekeeping in Roswell. The contour mapping of the site was finally completed, enabling Bill Doleman to go off on his own and investigate a surface anomaly he had noticed a few days earlier. Bill dubbed the anomaly an “alternate furrow” because it paralleled the track of the alleged gouge and resembled a gouge itself.
